Do I have to already have a business to sell on the market?
So you want to get involved, but you are unsure what you can sell? Some of you will already have a clear idea, maybe you already sell something online or you love making gift cards or selling bicycle pumps - great, go for it! But for the others who aren't so sure - don't let that put you off! Now is the time to have a think about what you could possibly do.
DO SOMETHING YOU ENJOY
Think about what you enjoy doing or have a passion for. Maybe you love music or maybe you enjoy drawing characatures, or do you write great poetry on the spot? Maybe you've got a good eye for a bargin and can create a stall that sells a range of 'vintage' products you've found in charity and junk shops or have charmed off your neighbour. Have a think about what you do best and see if there is a way to turn that into a business for a day!
THINK ABOUT YOUR STOCK LEVEL
If you run out of things to sell early on then you'll miss out on hours worth of potential sales - simple ey? The trick is to think about how much you may need. This is not a science, and market traders who have been doing it for years can still bring too much or too little to the stall - but it's worth having a guess. Also it will give you an idea that if you want to sell something that takes time to make, like knitted scarves, that you are going to have to make enough to sell. Work out how much time that will take and think about if that is worth it?
DON'T SWEAT IT
This really is a bit of fun, this is a chance to try something out, to see how it goes, to have a good time. There will be no marking, no shaking of heads or real competition (except the friendly type!) So don't sweat it, we are here to help as much as possible so you can ask us any questions you want - or ask your friends, parents, grandparents! The whole idea is to make this fun as well as an opportunity to see what you can achieve by running a market stall.
