Fancy running a food stall at the Youth Market? Here are some tips from Powys County Council on how

Advice for bakers from Powys County Council environmental health department.

For a one off bake sale people making cakes at home do not have to have a food hygiene certificate but you are advised to follow these simple tips:

  • Always wash your hands before preparing food.

  • Make sure that surfaces, bowls, utensils, etc. are clean.

  • Use paper cupcake cases for small cakes to avoid touching the cakes.

  • Don't use raw eggs in things like Icing or mousse which isn’t going to be thoroughly cooked.

  • Keep cheesecakes and cakes or desserts that containing cream or butter icing in the fridge.

  • Store your cakes in a clean, sealable container, away from raw foods, especially raw meat.

  • Make a list of all the ingredients in your cakes as some people might be allergic to something you have used.

On the day of the market or bake sale, people bringing in cakes from home should follow these tips:

  • Transport cakes in a clean, sealable container.

  • Bring your list of ingredients so you can answer questions about what is in your cakes.

  • Don’t leave food in a hot car.

  • Make sure that cheesecakes and any cakes or desserts containing cream or butter icing are out of the fridge for the shortest time possible.

  • Avoid touching the cakes - use tongs or a cake slice instead.
